A short devotional on Matthew 7:24-27.

Good Morning! I'm your host Lonnie Wibberding, and you are listening to God Notes.  A daily devotional podcast sent out from sunny Southern California.

Today is Wednesday, January 9, 2024.

Some of the most profound teachings in all the Bible are the words of Jesus. As God and man He had a way of cutting to the meat of a matter. He spoke with kindness and love, but also with clarity and confidence.

In Matthew chapter 5, 6, and 7 is recorded the longest sermon of Jesus. We call it the Sermon on the Mount. I've actually been to the place where Jesus told it. It's a beautiful south facing hill on the north side of the Sea of Galilee, and banana trees growing on the top now.

When Jesus gets to the end of His sermon, He tells one more story.

Matthew 7:24-27 says:

24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and its collapse was great.”

28 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

On the outside our lives may appear all put together. In good times everyone looks like they are doing well. But then the storms come and shows the difference.

Jesus gives us life principles not to take away our fun, but so we can stay standing in the storm.
